“That’s your pastor?”

Yes, I’ll admit I was not very focused on the pastor’s sermon that day. The huge bruise below his eye had me transfixed – what on earth…?

It was so distracting. His eye was red, and the bruise extended halfway down his cheek. You don’t expect your pastor to be getting involved in fights during the week, so everyone was wondering.

I didn’t have to wonder long, as the story was woven into his sermon.

He decided it would be funny to scare his wife as she came out of the bathroom. Their apartment had a little laundry hallway right beside the bathroom, and he waited in the dark. As she opened the bathroom door and turned off the light he knew his moment had arrived.

Moment of truth.

BOOOO! He yelled.

It worked. She jumped, and then swung reflexively to defend herself. Her fist connected with his left eye socket with all the strength she could muster.

He went down like a wet rag.

The whole congregation was laughing by the end of the story. Clearly he deserved what he got.

She still felt horrible, but it was a reflex, in a moment of fear.

Reflex actions are amazing. They have kept me from burning my hand numerous times while cooking. Your hand jumps and you avoid a scald or a burn. But sometimes you or someone else can get hurt when the reflex kicks in.

When we look at life there are actions that seem to be almost a reflex (the world’s response to Covid 19, how we treat disease with ONLY drugs…etc.)

Pain of neuropathy

One reflex is to hide the pain of neuropathy so you can’t feel it. It makes sense, blocking the pain so you can get on with living your life. It works – sort of.

But that reflex action doesn’t stop neuropathy, it just hides it for a while. Then it gets worse, and with the passage of time you start to lose the things you love. You can’t walk like you used to, you can’t work like before, and eventually neuropathy becomes an al consuming problem.

One thing that you need to know is this. There IS a way out.

It takes work though. There is no snake oil pill, vitamin, or one weird trick.

It’s like a dance, you need to learn the steps, and practice them.

If that’s something you’re ready for, then I might just be the right dance instructor for you. (That’s pretty funny – I have two left feet when it comes to dancing – but I know the steps to heal neuropathy backwards and forwards)
