Neuropathy answer, or neuropathy overwhelm?

It’s overwhelming. Never mind finding a neuropathy answer, it can become about just getting through the day.

Diabetes, Covid, numb burning feet, tingling, loss of balance, overweight, drugs, exhaustion. It’s all-consuming, frustrating, and painful.

Sometimes it’s helpful to take a step back and have a look at things from 40,000 feet. Break things down into bite-size pieces and have a bit of a think.

Let’s take a breath and have a look at neuropathy as a whole.

Peripheral neuropathy is a bunch of symptoms that show up when there is damage to small-fibre nerves. It starts in the feet and hands, but can spread from there. The nerve damage makes them fire abnormally or not send signals when they should.

This causes the typical pain and suffering of diabetic neuropathy: Numbness, burning, tingling, strange sensations, loss of balance.

How to get neuropathy

There are many things that can cause neuropathy.

Diabetes damages nerves with high (or low) blood sugar levels that produce toxins in the nerves.

Kidney disease leads to toxic damage to nerves. Many drugs cause damage to the nerve fibres and can affect the blood flow.

Malnutrition from our standard American diet (SAD) and drug treatment of diabetes, digestive trouble, and cholesterol makes nerves starve for nutrients and die.

The main treatment is to prescribe masking agents that reduce symptoms. These include drugs that reduce pain and anticonvulsant drugs like gabapentin that alter nerve function, making the symptoms less severe for some sufferers.

Naturally, just hiding the pain with drugs does nothing to stop the damage. This means that neuropathy becomes “progressive,” getting worse over time.

From this 40,000 foot view, it seems clear that hiding the pain while allowing it to get worse is insanity at best – purely evil at worst. It provides an ever-worsening pain for which you will require constant drugs for the rest of your life. That’s great for drug companies but absolute torment for you.
