Planning for failure with your diabetes care plan.

Why is it that the typical diabetes care plan consists of refilling the prescription every year?

The approach to type one diabetes is different. When my youngest had his rapid descent into type 1 diabetes, he was (and still is) treated much differently than most type 2 diabetics.

He spent three days in the pediatric ICU, and we underwent hours of training and preparation on how to manage his disease. Calculating and administering insulin, adapting basal doses, bolus doses, and daily managing to keep his A1c at a safe level.

When they diagnose type two diabetes, the standard is to prescribe drugs to “fix” the problem, and give some guidelines (that don’t work very well) as to how to eat. Then every few months, they test A1c and renew prescriptions.

Planning for success

Here’s the rub – while I haven’t seen any research that shows how to reverse type 1 diabetes – There is research that shows how to reverse type 2 diabetes in over 60% of cases. Even those that don’t reverse still improve. And it seems to start by ignoring the guidelines.

Diabetes can lead to a list of further destruction to nerves, kidneys, and retinas. It’s a path straight to pain and disability.

For type 1, it’s all about management.

For type 2, it’s the same, except we do a terrible job for most people. We can do better.

Sure, some won’t want to. Some prefer to sit on the couch, feast on candy, pasta, and bread, and watch that A1c head for the stars. They believe it’s just too hard to make any changes in the way they live – so they take their drugs and wait for things to get worse.

Making change

I get it. Change is hard. And what I teach is not for those who won’t put in some effort. So if you know you’re that person, you can disregard this entire post. I’ll leave you alone with your bag of potato chips.

But some will tire of the pain, the numb burning feet, and want to escape.
